British Airways to Add Third Daily London–Delhi Flight Amid UK Trade Mission to India

MUMBAI — British Airways (BA) is set to expand its India network as part of a high-profile UK Government trade mission led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The airline announced plans to launch a third daily flight between London Heathrow (LHR) and Delhi (DEL) in 2026, pending regulatory approval.

This expansion aligns with growing economic ties between the UK and India following the signing of a Free Trade Agreement earlier this year.

British Airways said the move would strengthen trade, tourism, and business connectivity between the two nations.

Trade Mission Supports Bilateral Business

The UK trade delegation, comprising around 130 top CEOs and senior ministers, traveled on a chartered British Airways flight to Mumbai (BOM) to advance bilateral trade relations.

The visit followed the landmark Free Trade Agreement signed in July between Prime Minister Keir Starmer and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sean Doyle, Chairman and CEO of British Airways, highlighted the airline’s century-long relationship with India, calling it a “strategic market and a vital component of our global operations.”

BA currently operates 56 direct weekly services across five Indian cities—Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru (BLR), Hyderabad (HYD), and Chennai (MAA). India is the airline’s largest market outside the United States.

Doyle emphasized that the trade deal would accelerate economic collaboration and that British Airways, as the UK’s national carrier, will play a central role in facilitating business and connectivity.

The additional daily service to Delhi, alongside the reintroduction of the First cabin on Mumbai flights, reflects the airline’s ongoing commitment to the market.

Expansion and Customer Experience Initiatives

BA continues to expand operations while enhancing the passenger experience.

In addition to new routes, the airline introduced a free Meet and Assist service for travelers requiring extra support when flying from India to the UK.

Since launching in March, the service has assisted around 5,500 passengers across all five Indian airports served by BA.

Staff fluent in Hindi, Punjabi, Telugu, and Tamil ensure smooth transit for travelers needing personalized support.

The airline is also executing a £7 billion transformation plan, encompassing over 900 initiatives aimed at improving comfort and efficiency.

These include new short-haul seats, free in-flight Wi-Fi messaging, upgraded lounges, and the rollout of the Club Suite across all India routes by the end of 2026.

Economic Impact and Passenger Demand

The 56 weekly flights equate to nearly 1.5 million annual seats between London and India, underscoring the strength of the bilateral travel market.

Cargo movement between the UK and India increased by 14% last year, driven by trade in high-value goods.

The route supports UK exports such as whisky, automotive components, telecom equipment, and electronics, while India supplies pharmaceuticals and medical technologies.

Passenger travel demand is also rising, with the London–Hyderabad route recently ranking among the top ten fastest-growing searches on BA’s website.

Looking Ahead: Strategic Growth

As economic and cultural ties deepen, BA’s increased flight frequency and service upgrades position it to capture future growth in the UK–India corridor.

The combination of government backing, trade momentum, and sustained investment signals a strong commitment to long-term expansion in one of the airline’s most strategic markets.

Sean Doyle added: “Our mission is to connect people, businesses, and cultures. This expansion reinforces our dedication to India as a key partner.”

The airline also plans to continue developing services for corporate and leisure passengers, including loyalty program enhancements and in-flight innovations.

Experts note that the new daily Delhi service will boost business travel and tourism, benefiting sectors ranging from finance to hospitality.

BA’s investments are expected to generate additional employment in India, both directly through airport operations and indirectly through travel-related industries.

Passengers and trade delegates alike have welcomed the expansion, highlighting its importance for UK–India bilateral relations.

With a century-long legacy in India, BA aims to maintain a leading position in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.
