China’s C909 Passenger Jet Launches Commercial Service in Vietnam with Vietjet Air

China’s domestically produced C909 passenger jet has officially commenced commercial operations in Vietnam, marking a significant milestone in the aircraft’s growing footprint across Southeast Asia.

Developed by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), two C909 jets leased by Chengdu Airlines have been deployed by Vietjet Air, beginning service on the Hanoi–Con Dao–Ho Chi Minh City route.

Formerly known as the ARJ21, the C909 is a regional jetliner with a flight range between 2,225 and 3,700 kilometres.

Vietjet Air, Vietnam’s pioneering private airline and a key player in Asia-Pacific regional aviation, becomes the third international carrier to operate the Chinese jet, following Indonesia’s TransNusa and Lao Airlines.

The aircraft were leased under a wet lease agreement, which includes the provision of crew, maintenance, insurance, and operational support.

This model enables smooth integration into Vietjet’s operations and supports the airline’s efforts to expand regional connectivity.

According to COMAC, the C909 has gained traction in the Southeast Asian market. Since its first overseas delivery to TransNusa in December 2022, and another to Lao Airlines in March 2025, the aircraft has been used across 15 regional routes by three carriers.

Combined, these operations have transported over 250,000 passengers, underlining the jetliner’s growing role in regional air travel.

Industry analysts suggest that Vietjet’s adoption of the C909 will not only enhance its fleet capacity but also contribute to the overall development of Vietnam’s aviation sector.
