CRETE, GREECE – Tripadvisor’s annual Traveller’s Choice Awards has officially crowned Elafonissi Beach in Crete as the best beach in the world for 2025.
The stunning location, known for its unique pink sands and crystal-clear waters, has topped the list after a four-year absence from the rankings.
Located on the southwestern coast of the Greek island, Elafonissi is a small islet separated from the mainland by a shallow lagoon.

The beach’s signature pastel pink shoreline results from microscopic marine organisms known as Foraminifera, which produce red-pigmented shells that break down and mix with the white sand grains.
Rankings Based on Millions of Traveller Reviews
Tripadvisor’s beach rankings are determined through an in-depth analysis of millions of reviews and ratings gathered over the past 12 months.
Currently holding a 4.5-star rating from over 16,000 reviews, Elafonissi Beach has been described as a must-visit destination. The platform highlights its family-friendly shallow lagoons and adventurous deeper waters for activities such as swimming and snorkelling.
Visitors are encouraged to stay until sunset, which many reviewers claim is breathtaking.

A Paradise Comparable to the Maldives and Caribbean
Travellers have dubbed Elafonissi Beach the “Maldives of Crete”, with some comparing it to the Caribbean. One reviewer, Xhiria, called it a “must-see”, describing the clear water and paradise-like setting before crowds arrive.
Another reviewer noted, “The pink grains of sand dance around at the water’s edge”, while another declared, “This is the most stunning beach I have ever seen.”
However, some visitors have pointed out that the beach can become overcrowded in summer, and there have been reports of tourists taking samples of the pink sand. Reviewer Cerys1992 lamented, “It’s a shame that inconsiderate tourists have been stealing the pink sand.”
Travel and Best Times to Visit
Visitors can easily reach Elafonissi Beach from Chania, the nearest major city with convenient transport links. The beach is approximately one hour’s drive from Chania.

Direct flights from the UK to Chania take around four hours, with one-way tickets from London Gatwick available for as low as £40 in April.
To avoid large crowds, travellers are advised to visit during the shoulder seasons of May and September instead of the peak summer months of June, July, and August.
Facilities and Nearby Attractions
While sunbeds are available for rent, visitors should be aware that there is no natural shade on the beach. It is recommended to bring umbrellas, hats, and suncream for all-day stays.
Beyond sunbathing and swimming, visitors can explore the Elafonissi Nature Reserve, a protected area home to rare wildlife, including sea turtles and migratory birds.
Another nearby attraction is the Chrysoskalitissa Monastery, a 17th-century cliffside monastery offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

With its mesmerizing pink sands, pristine waters, and unique natural surroundings, Elafonissi Beach stands as a must-visit destination for 2025, cementing its place as the world’s top-ranked beach.
